Patients in nursing homes usually have a number of co-morbidities and therefore take many medicines to manage the conditions appropriately. Medication administration error is more likely to occur in these settings than any where else. They rely on care home staff to administer the medicines for them. We understand how complicated and stressful this process can be for the staff in nursing homes and this is why we make this as simple and stress free as we possibly could. The Pharmacy team can supply each medicines in colour coded blisters for the residents according to the times that the medicines are due to be taken and MAR charts to correlate this. We deliver medicines on a monthly basis for the regular medicines as most of the homes operate in this systems and we make every effort to supply any urgent antibiotics and intermediate prescriptions on the same day subject to stock availability.
We pick up the monthly repeats two weeks before the cycle and deliver to the surgery and pick up the prescriptions from the surgery-in most cases they are directly sent to us through the EPS system. A week before the monthly medicines are due to be started we deliver the medicines to the care homes so that this gives the staff enough time to rectify any problems should it arise.
